Search Planning Intermediate

Course Code: SPI
Duration: 5 day course
Student Numbers: 10

General Description

The application of search planning has been computerised now for some 25years, from the introduction of original DOS based systems which merely assisted the user to deliver solutions to tedious and time consuming calculations. The World is now utilising the 3rd generation of system which visualises solutions on S57 electronic navigational charts and by using the most up to date stochastic modelling processes. This course will act as an effective refresher course following the SPF module, first of all revising key elements of search planning theory, and secondly working with a state of the art software package to calculate solutions to even the most complex of search planning scenarios. The course is a mix of theoretical and exercise based learning and will normally utilise the SARIS software system on offer from BMT ARGOSS Ltd. The course can be delivered using alternative software systems by special arrangement.

Course Aim

The Search Planning Intermediate course aims to give students a basic understanding of the theory of Search Planning as well as developing the skills required to solve a range of SAD and SAC scenarios using a world famous software application. By the end of the course the student will be able to demonstrate their skills through participation in a large number of practical exercises.

Prerequisite Knowledge or qualifications

The student should have first completed the SPF course which will have given a detailed knowledge of the theory underpinning the search planning processes. In addition, although not essential, the student will benefit from basic computer literacy skills using a mouse and keyboard. The course will be delivered using the English Language, and students should be orally fluent in its use. With proper notice, it may be possible to organise an interpreter service should the client deem this necessary.

Target Audience

This course is designed for Rescue Centre Staff who require to refresh their search planning skills. It would provide a very useful introduction to the subject for Managers who require an overview of the subject but who are not required to deliver real-time solutions during SAR incidents. Equally, it will be useful for declared SAR response facility Commanders and Senior Officers who will seek to properly understand the role of the SMC and be able to offer effective feedback on the SMC’s plans.
